As holidays involving fireworks approach, it’s natural for parents to worry about their baby’s sleep getting disrupted. But fret not, there are ways our baby sleep consultants recommend to make sure your little one sleeps through it all. Here’s how:
First, plan your baby’s bedtime in such a way that they enter deep sleep just as the fireworks begin. Keep in mind that babies take about 30 minutes to reach deep sleep, while preschoolers and older children take about an hour. As sleep cycles last 45-60 minutes, depending on age, lay your baby down at either 7:15 pm or 8:30 pm, and your older child at 7 pm or 8 pm if the fireworks are set to start at 9 pm.
Secondly, use white noise to mask the sound of the fireworks. Simply turn it on in your child’s room. We love the Hatch Rest!
Lastly, if your baby wakes up, wait a few minutes before intervening. If they have independent sleep skills, they may fall back asleep on their own. Use your judgment to decide when to assist, and once you do, lay them back down and give them space to drift off again.
Remember, holidays are a time to have fun with loved ones. It’s okay to break from your routine, and if your little ones join in, you can focus on their sleep the next day.
